The first time I ever visited Washington D.C. I didn’t know what to expect! I knew there were lots of places to see and things to do. My family and I had just came as a weekend trip not realizing that a family could stay for a week and still not experience all that D.C. had to offer. Nevertheless I picked up a downtown city map upon our arrival. As I looked at the map, it was shrunk down so small to fit everything onto a small page, it appeared every site in D.C. was within a block of each other. So with a mans’ attitude of wanting to conquer all the sites in just two days, I threw together a plan to walk to the closer sites and use the subway to get to the further ones.
Our first stop was the Capitol Building, after walking a half mile from the subway, we were told we needed tickets to get in but they were all taken for the day. After a half mile walk back to the subway we took the next stop to the National Mall and museum area. Later from there we walked a half mile over to the Washington monument, but it was fenced in and I didn’t know exactly were the entrance was. Unfortunately, I of course walked in the opposite direction of the entrance. Another half mile later we got the same result as at the Capitol Building, we would have to come back the next morning for tickets. From there we walked to the White House. By this time we had walked five miles with small children, and had blisters on our feet. By this point I had to start paying a cab $10 for each half mile stop.
I did consider using the conventional tour services, but found that they only picked you up in certain areas and you had to see what they wanted you to see and on their schedule. The second day we feel into the same situation as the day before, walking again as I was told we could catch a city bus around the D.C. area. However we quickly found that the buses missed some attractions, the stops weren't always near the entrances, and you would have to change buses so much you could spend your whole vacation trying to figure out the bus schedules. To make a long story short, we ended up planning a second trip back to D.C., but it was as exhausting as the first trip.
Through these experiences we found a way to solve all those problems and make your travel through the D.C. area EASY! When you plan your travel needs through Washington we know you have many options available to you. Click here to see what sets us apart from our competition.
